Review of Spy Family Season 1

What’s up Nerds!

I just finished season 1 of Spy Family, and before jumping into season 2 I thought I would give a quick review of the season before getting into the new season.

Disclaimer: There will be spoilers! And I’ll be focusing on the last half of the season since that’s what’s freshest on my mind 🙂

The Forgers

This makeshift family has come together in order to pull off a great mission that will ensure the peace of two countries. No one is privy to the details of this mission besides Twilight, The Handler, the spies, the informant and Anya? That’s right she wants to help her adopted dad take down the evil boss like they do in her favorite spy cartoons. Oh but let’s not forget that she can read minds! Although her adoptive dad had not idea of her special powers when he adopted her, she’s been trying to be helpful to him since he got her out of the orphanage.

There are many feats that Anya accomplishes during her time as a Forger. She stops different evil plans that would hinder Loid. Knowing that his plan hinders on him having a better relationship with Donovan Desmond. Anya sees this opportunity by wanting to get to know Desmond’s second son Damien. Because her getting 8 Stellas is probably less likely.

Then there’s Yor. Our city hall clerk by day and assassin by night. She is loyal and kind. She is also very patient. She demonstrates this patience by helping Anya find the right pet. When Loid has to go and compete with Fiona in a “tennis” tournament, Yor helps Anya practice tennis to try to help her athletic skills. She has natural mothering skills because she had to take care of her younger brother after their parents died. Yor continues to show her dedication to the family by going to get help from her coworker so she can learn how to cook. While Yor is talented and a very skilled assassin her one weakness is that she is unable to cook well. But because of her dedication she was able to learn a recipe lefts by her mother. She wants to be useful to both Loid and Anya and feels ashamed when she thinks she’s getting replaced by Fiona/Nightfall. So much so that she gets drunk when Loid tries to tell her it was all a misunderstanding.

Speaking of Loid. Loid Forger aka Twilight is the best spy of disguises. He is a legend around the agency and uses his skills frequently. There was the time where he used his disguise to dress up like a teacher in order to help make sure Damien passes his midterms (and also check on Anya’s paper). He also plays the part of a psychiatrist at a hospital, a perfect cover to allow late nights and early mornings. Although he is very technical and distant, he cares about his family in his own ways. Like when he used his spy connections to reenact a scene from Bondman for Anya. HIs ultimate goal is to make the world safe so that the civilians like Anya and Yor never have to experience the trauma that is war.

I enjoy how Anya is being Anya no matter where she is. She is helpful even though Loid and Yor have no idea what she’s talking about most of the time. Her helpful nudges solidifies her friendship with Damien which allows for him to speak with his father. Her courage encouraged Damien and also allowed Loid a chance to meet his father. While the mission could be going a little bit better, Loid is successful in making contact with is target and further understands Desmond’s dynamic with his two sons. This new information will hopefully aid Loid in his operation. She’s even more helpful with her special dog named Bond who can see glimpses of the future. Anya uses this to her advantage like when she was able to prevent Loid and his partner from being blown up by a bomb. We love Bond and his borfs.

This anime is cute, fun, and exciting. I love all of their personalities. I’m curious as to how Loid is going to deal with his feelings for Yor as they develop. And of course when Anya is going to revel that she’s been reading their minds since the beginning. I hope she reveals it in the second season. Also an important side note is that is also has amazing music! I get so much joy listening to the opening and ending songs. So far I would definitely give Spy Family 5 Nerd Light stars for its characters, plot line and music. This is a great starter anime for those dabbling or just stepping into the anime world.

That’s all I got tonight and I’ll see you tomorrow. Keep Nerding Out!
