What’s up people! I am excited to write this quick review on the anime called Maid-Sama. This is one I saw on Netflix! So here is my quick review! The elements I will be reviewing are: characters, music, animation and story.
Characters
I love the main character Misaki because she is so different from the typical main character in a romance anime. She is an intimidating leader and is the student body president. She has no problem whipping the boys of her school in shape in order to make it a better place for her female classmates. She comes from a poor family, but she does not play victim about their struggles or tries to gain pity from anyone. She works an honest job as a cosplaying waitress at a Maid Cafe. She does what she needs to do to help her family, and she doesn’t mind helping out a friend in need.
The leading male protagonist is named Usui. First off I love his name. I don’t think I’ve seen or heard of it in any anime I’ve come across. Secondly, Usui justs oozes (see what I did there lol) confidence. He is the most popular boy at school and has a natural talent for just about every skill. I am enjoying his banter with Misaki and can’t wait to see how he woos her. I also am found of all the supporting characters so far and how they interact with Misaki and Usui.
Music
The music is typical for a romance anime. I enjoy the music that plays whenever Usui is around. I like the fancy music that plays whenever we are in the maid cafe. It really fits the mood that this is supposed to be a place where you can come and relax. Not only can you relax at the Maid Latte, but you will have impeccable service. I also liked that Maid-Sama had lighthearted music to use throughout the show. A lot of romance anime tend to have very light and piano heavy music. It does show up during the sentimental moments between Misaki and Usui. Overall the music is very fitting for the show.
Animation
This anime is done by J.C. Staff animation studio. This studio has a lot of well known anime on their resume including The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. and Toradora. Knowing some of the other anime they have produced should paint a picture on what Maid-sama may look like. It is well drawn and nicely animated. There’s not too much add to this because it looks so great. J.C. Staff, continues to put out quality work.
Story
When it comes to story-lines in romance animes, they can be cliche. And honestly, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the cliche. As for Maid-Sama, I love how the story is centered around Misaki helping people in school and at the Maid Latte. I love so far how Misaki is showing how you can be strong and vulnerable. I also like how Usui is being more of a support to Misaki. I think what sets this anime apart from other romance shows, is that the girl is not chasing the guy. Usui is persistent in his pursuit of Misaki. Even when she continues to reject him (she’s not being serious, she just can’t admit her true feelings), Usui still shows up when she needs him.
Final Thoughts
This is a great show from what I’ve seen so far! I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a different romance anime to watch. There’s plenty of fun cheesy moments, but Misaki is a strong female lead you just don’t see in most shows in this genre. I recommend this show wholeheartedly, it’s definitely worth the watch. Let me know what you guys think in the comments or over on Instagram! Love y’all! Peace!
