In this blog series I will be giving a quick first impression and thoughts of the first episode of the anime series. While I don’t know the entirety of the story, there will be spoilers for the first episode, but I”ll try to leave out really important plot devices. There are four elements I’m judging:
- Characters
- Music
- Animation
- Story
With these four categories I will be deciding whether I recommend continuing to watch based off the first episode.
Quick Summary
Hisone Amakasu is a new cadet in a Japanese Air Base. She is selected to join a new team in Hangar 8. There she finds out there is another hidden program called the OTF which stands for the Organic Transformed Flyers. These Organic Transformed Flyers are actually dragons and she’s been chosen to pilot one. And the one who choose her, was the dragon himself.
Characters
So far the characters are cool. The main character Amakasu seems timid and shies away from attention. I didn’t know if I was going to like her at first, because she seemed to come across and super weak, the annoyingly kind of weak. This thought came to mind, because she started to whine about not wanting to go to Hangar 8, stating she doesn’t go to the northern part of the campus. However as the episode goes on, she reveals why she acts the way she does and I couldn’t have related more. SPOILERALERT! You see, she’s quiet because she has no filter. If she really said what was on her mind, she knows she would hurt a lot of feelings. I thought this was a great way to let us know that while she is quiet, she has plenty of thoughts and opinions about herself and her situation.
Music
So this anime didn’t really strike me as one with amazing music. The music is typical for an anime show so I don’t have too much to say on it based on the first episode.
Animation
I love the art style of the show. It has a style that very much resembles something from Studio Ghibli, mixed with an older feel. It doesn’t feel like it was created in 2018. I was surprised to see how “cute” the dragons look. They lack a menacing look, which is probably good for the best as it seems like this show may be advertised to kids. The dragons kind of remind me of large sized Yoshis.
Story
I like the story so far. It seems like Amakas will be learning more about herself as she pilots this dragon. Oh did I mention that the dragon is actually being camuflouged as a jet??? I mean it’s literal Transformers for dragons. The dragon seems aloof to her, but is slowly warming up to her. Again it is set up as a typical shonen so you can expect to see some development between her and her dragon.
Final thoughts
Overall I liked the show. This isn’t one that I’m dying to finish, but it’s good so far. And it gives me a cute, homey feel.
My recommendation: It’s a good one to binge, thanks Netflix.
