Quick Review: Cannonbuster

Welcome back to my quick review blogging series. Today’s post is going to be on another Netflix anime: Cannon Buster. Originally a comic book released by created Le’Sean Thomas back in 2005, it got it’s anime adaptation and premiered on Netflix August of 2019. And as always there main be spoiler alerts ahead!

So for this quick review I’m judging the first episode and giving my first impressions. I judge based on these four categories: characters, music, animation, and story. So let’s get into the review!

Characters

We are introduced to three main characters: Philly the Kid, Sam, and Casey Turnbuckle. Philly is a wanted man who is immortal (more on this in a bit) and Sam and Casey are robots. So far I think Philly would be my favorite character. While I don’t know how he obtain immortality, I’m super interested in how he got it. So Philly has tattoos of numbers on his body. You find out after he gets shot literally through his stomach, that each time he dies, a number shows up on his skin. Sam is a bit annoying, but she can’t help how she was programmed. Casey seems to be there for comedic relief so far.

Music

I love the intro to the show. I was expecting to hear something more western themed since the show definitely gives off a cowboy vibe. It was definitely a surprise to hear jazzy riffs and the soulfulness of a choir. The musical within the show is not as jazzy in my opinion, but it is still good anime quality music. .

Animation

I always think it’s super cool to hear how comic books get turned into shows or movies. Like in any mecha anime, there’s a balance between 2D and 3D. Oh did I forget to mention the ragin bull robot at the beginning of the episode? Yes it’s name is Bessie and I think it is definitely need help pull off the animation for this series. Overall the quality is great and is definitely a Netflix show.

Story

If I’m being honest, there is not a lot of story in the first episode. I think the main purpose of this episode was to solely introduce the main characters of the series. I don’t know why Philly the Kid is a wanted man. I know that Sam is looking for a Prince Kelby, while also being chased by the Bortican guards (Bortica is where Sam and Prince Kelby are from). I wish there was a little more information revealed about Philly the Kid and why he is on the run. I hope as the story continues we get a little more insight on what happened to Philly the Kid and why he’s one of the few who have the ability .

My recommendation: Watch episode 2 and 3 to truly decide if you want to invest in this series.

Thanks for reading! If you’ve watched the show let me know what your thoughts are and if I should keep watching! See you tomorrow, peace!
