Mobile Game Review: Lily’s Café

What’s up Nerds! I wanted to start this November off nice and simple. In doing so, I wanted to highlight some the mobile games I’ve been playing. Before we get into the review here are the criteria I am judging the game with:

  1. Graphics-are the graphics lagging? Are the clear? Are the graphics a selling point of the game?
  2. Story-Is there a storyline? If so, is it interesting?
  3. Game Mechanics- How does the game work? Are the controls complicated?
  4. Time played- Does this mobile game keep me coming back to play?
  5. Final Thoughts

Now that we have our criteria let’s get into the mobile game today: Lily’s Café! Lily’s Café is made by Pix Up! and it was made with Unity. It is what I would describe as a cozy mobile game to pleasantly pass the time.

Graphics

The graphics are cute. It is invoking the fall with the various shades of brown. It makes you feel nice and cozy like you could snuggle with your favorite cup of tea and blanket. I really like the art style the developers went with. It’s not harsh on the eyes or make it hard to see what the game is doing. Some mobile games have graphics that make it difficult to see what you are doing within the game, but not Lily’s Café. Everything runs effortlessly from one screen to another. The graphics, to me, gives those café vibes that I would want for a mobile game.

Story

The story starts out with a little tutorial where a nice old lady shows you the ropes of running the café. Once you prep the supplies, it’s time to make some waffles. Oh, did I forget to mention it’s a waffle café?? Yes, coffee and waffles. What a wonderful combination of items. After she teaches you how to run the café she’ll explain that there are many types of people that drop by. She will emphasize that you should take the time to get to know them and see what interesting stories you can learn from them. I haven’t been playing long but I do enjoy seeing and talking to different customers.

Game Mechanics

Now before you get to start making waffles, you have to prep your supplies! So to do that you get to play this very simple matching game. You have to click on a different ingredient and match three of them in a row. This mini games gives strong vibes (or inspiration) from mahjong. Once you have sorted all the supplies you’ll be brought the the café ready to open! To start out you’ll only have one waffle maker and a coffee machine with very few toppings. But as you progress and earn a profit you’ll be able to upgrade soon after starting. It is your typical strategy and time management games but with a lot less stress. Sometimes I tend to forget that I should be enjoying the passing conversation with the customers versus trying to make sure I have batter ready for the next waffle. Overall the game mechanics are easy to understand and gives you a chance to use just a little bit of strategy.

Time Played

Since downloading I’ve been playing everyday for the last couple of weeks. I can say I spend about 15-20 minutes in the game. Just enough to get things done but not enough to be bored with the game. It gives me a nice distraction when I’m waiting for someone or just need a few minutes to myself. I have to keep playing to unlock a couple more cafes in the game.

Final Thoughts

This is lovely cozy mobile game will draw you in with it’s charm and it’s yummy looking waffles. It seriously has me considering some different toppings for my waffles in the future. If you’re looking for something to provide you more strategy, this is not the game for you. This is a go with the flow, we’re not rushing here. It’s like a nice stroll in the park as you watch the leaves fall off the trees. So go ahead and get you a bit of autumn in Lily’s Cafe!

I’ll see you tomorrow, keep nerding out!
