It’s been 7 years since Playstation has released another console and the PS5 is coming out later this year. Of course you can expect it to be released around the holidays. So here are my thoughts so far. Quick disclaimer: I’m not a techie, so I am coming from this solely froma perspective as a gamer/consumer/
The one thing I am most excited for is the backwards compatibility function. How long have we waited for a Sony system to have backwards compatibility?? On Playstation’s Blog, there’s an article by the Senior Vice President of Platform Planning and Managment named Hideaki Nishino. In this he states that “We recently took a look at the top 100 PS4 titles as ranked by play time, and we’re expecting almost all of them to be playable at launch on PS5.” This is progress! I, like most gamers, have an extensive collection of games on the PS4. You can’t really expect people to not want backwards compatibility when it’s been 7 years since a console release. While I can’t see myself getting rid of my PS4, knowing that the PS5 will be able to handle some of my PS4 games, makes it a more realstic purchase.
Next, I really like how the developers are showcasing the audio as a feature with the PS5. The new console will have 3D audio. When I was first researching the PS5 I was surprised to see this listed as a feature. Referring back to that same article on the blog, it stated that the 3D audio will give the player a more immersive experience. The example they give is that you will be able to hear things like the rain falling on different surfaces. I wonder how that’s going to translate to people who might not own a soundbar or some kind of surroun system. I know the 3D audio is supposed to help this, but since I don’t know all the tech behind it, I am looking forward to seeing a demo.
They have also released the newest design of the DualSense controller. I know there’s some debate on the new boomerang like look, but I’m digging it. It does look similar to the Nintendo Switch controller, which is great for me as I won’t have to reorient my hands to this new controller. It will be a seamless transition between the two. I think this is a great plus for gamers like me who do a lot of PlayStation and Nintendo Switch gaming. The designers also have moved the LED lightbar to behind the touch pad. This is supposed to make this area appear larger.
The one feature I’m looking forward to the most would be the new haptic feedback. While I will miss the rumble feature, I’m interested in how the controller will
