Is a Game Worth Playing After the Hype?

I’m going to be honest. I don’t always get games when they come out. I don’t always pre-order the latest games and I still don’t have Kakarot. But there are certain games that live up to the hype even years later. The question remains, are they worth playing?

I first ran into this conundrum when I pre-ordered Kingdom Hearts 3. I was so excited and there’s been a lot of hype surrounding the game. This was mostly because of how long it took the developers to make the game. So I got the game on its release day, but I didn’t actually play it until almost a year later. I really wanted to get through all the other games first so I could know where everyone (the characters) stood in Kingdom Hearts 3. But you guys, once I started playing the game I lost the desire to finish it. The hype was lost. I’m sure one day I’ll finish it but spoilers are out there so I don’t feel compelled to complete it.

However, I also have the Witcher 3 that came out back in 2015 and I absolutely need to finish the game. I don’t if it’s because of the new show that came out or because of all of the hyped reviews, but I absolutely want to see this game to the end. There’s not a whole lot of games that can still carry this kind of hype like the Witcher 3. I would also add Breath of the Wild to that list. It comes down to the experience the player has while completing the game.

Breath of the Wild is an experience I was hoping to have and more. I can’t tell you how good it felt in the opening scene when Link comes out of the Resurrection Shrine, and looks over Hyrule for the first time. How I felt in that moment is priceless. Not every game can do this, but this also includes games that have such publicity around their release date, that everyone goes broke trying to get the latest things. Is having the newest game really worth it?

I think this is more of a comment on how expensive games are and how it can be difficult to keep up in the gaming industry. If you want to stream on Twitch or stream your PC gaming, you can’t really do that and grow if you can’t afford any games. And don’t get it twisted I’m not saying you need to have the newest games to stream or any of that. What I am saying though is that it’s just intimidating when you see the big names in the gaming/streaming industries all talking about the latest game.

So if you don’t buy it when it comes out, is it worth getting? What if you’ve seen the reviews and found out it wasn’t really that great? Truthfully, this is all subjective. It is contingent on you as a person, and on the game. But I like getting games after the hype has died down. This gives me a chance to play the game for me, and not to impress someone.

Y’all need to know that I won’t have all the newest games. But what I will have is a perspective that only I can articulate. Whether I’m talking about a brand new game like Kakarot or a game like Life is Strange, only I can tell you my thoughts about it. Thoughts that will hopefully build a community for you guys to share too.

Do you think it’s worth buying the a game after the hype? What are some games you’d recommend playing now that the hype is gone? Let me know your thoughts. Peace!
