What’s good Nerds?
As I was traveling to and fro during Thanksgiving traffic, my husband and I were talking about video games. No surprise of course. But he asked me if I could change anything to the legend of Zelda what would it be? While I personally think most Legend of Zelda games are amazing I did happen to think of an idea I wouldn’t mind seeing.
So this was purely for fun and nothing else, so please don’t read into it. Also this is not a theory and no I didn’t do an extensive study of Hyrule Historia for this post. This again is just for fun ☺️. Now that the disclaimer is out is the way let’s get into it!
So throughout LoZ there has in most games been a center 3: Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf. And in this center, it is always two against one. Courage and Wisdom go against Power. In this case, the triforce is spilt into 3 separate entities but are equal in their worth. Using logic 2 is greater than 1. Meaning that whenever the Trifocal of Wisdom and the Triforce of Courage come together, it is certain that they will win. This is all told in Skyward Sword as Link defeats Demise. But before he completely perishes he casts a curse on Link and Zelda. That as long as their reincarnations exist, so will a version of him. And they will always be in this endless battle with each other.
So here’s the concept: what if we subverted that? I have two ideas. The first is this, what if Zelda was the evil one, but she didn’t covet power she coveted wisdom and intelligence. Can you imagine Link and Ganondorf pairing up to figure out how to take down the evil queen of wisdom? Ganondorf could use his strength for the good of the people in Hyrule, specifically theory women in the Gerudo Village. Link could go and seek help from the Skull Kids in the Lost Woods. Also, I’d include that the Sheikah usually don’t stray from their loyalty to the royal family, even keeping some dark secrets ( looking at you Bongo Bongo). But in this alternative world the Sheikah would be loyal to the Queen of wisdom until they’re not. They will function like King Bulblin from Twilight Princess. They will follow whoever’s the strongest. In this game, Link who has the Triforce of Courage will work hand in hand with Ganondorf who has the Triforce of Power. I could go deeper with this story and say that Link and Zelda grew up with each other but had different fundamental morals. Zelda never knowing or experiencing life outside of the kingdom develops a harsher and pretentious outlook on the world outside of Hyrule castle Link who was adopted and never really had a place to call home feels a kinship to Ganondorf as they are both from outside of Hyrule. Link knows he was left there but had no other means of finding his parents.
I don’t know how Link and Ganondorf would meet, but I do know that Zelda wouldn’t be happy about it and call Ganondorf an outsider. This would cause conflicting feelings for Link as he always thought Zelda to be kind. Link’s eyes are open when he sees Zelda verbally disrespect Ganondorf for not executing their customs flawlessly. Think of the ridicule Quasimodo felt, and that’s what Ganondorf will go through. This turn of events will leave Link stunned and resentful towards Zelda.
After this point, I don’t know if I would make it so Ganondorf planned it or if Zelda really is evil and Link has to save her from the evil in her heart. But either way, it would be a pretty cool and different kind of story than the traditional LoZ games.
Did you like that idea? Okay here’s my next one: Link is corrupted by Ganondorf and Zelda has to save him. So we’re still putting the Triforces of power and courage together, but this version still leaves Ganondorf as the evil one. Somehow he will corrupt Link and they will start working together to take down Zelda and her Triforce of Wisdom. But being that she has the Triforce of Wisdom it allows her to be cautious and cunning as she tries to bring Link back to the good side. I can foresee this story having twists and turns. I think the biggest hurdle though would be if people would want to play as Zelda on a quest. This idea would be the like ultimate end of the series though. Not Link but Zelda actually venturing off of a quest to save Hyrule and then there are history books and oral stories written about her and Link literally making her a legit legend! All I’m saying is that it would be pretty freaking cool if it happened hahaha. So Nintendo if you ever want to hit me up on an idea let me know 🙂
These were my alternate LoZ ideas, what about you? What Legend of Zelda story do you wish you could play? Let me know in the comments below and keep nerding out!
