If you have even a slight interest in games you know it’s going to be a financial invest. But who says you have to spend all your life’s savings to get the brand new gear?
Want to get into gaming? Here are 3 tips on saving while gaming.
- Don’t buy the newest console.
Now this might seem obvious, but there’s some advantages to not buying the brand new console. Technology is always changing and so gaming companies like Sony and Microsoft have to keep up with trends. But you don’t! Yes, that new generation of the PlayStation looks great, but everyone doesn’t have $400-$600 to drop on one system with no games. Man, I miss those PlayStation 2 days when you only needed like $200.
Here’s the advice, find an older generation console. You don’t have to go all the way back to the Atari and N64 days (unless you know that’s your prerogative, classics are making a comeback). But do some searching at your local GameStop or on Amazon and you’ll find what you need. When I was in 4th grade my very first console was a Nintendo GameCube. I’ll never forget that little blue cube and the hours I spent playing on it, which Segway to my next point…
2. Buy Game Bundles
Alright so you’ve just purchased your slightly older console, but wait! You still need something to play right? Right! So jumping back to my days of 4th grade, I said I spent hours on hours playing the GameCube. Well my parents didn’t know a whole lot about games so I didn’t have a bunch of different ones to play. Which was fine, because this GameCube wasn’t a regular ol’ cube. No this GameCube included the Legend of Zelda Collector’s Edition. That means I got not 1, not 2, but 4 FULL games plus a demo from the then up and coming Legend of Zelda: Windwaker. This is what led to a love a games and with Legend of Zelda being one of my all time favorite series to play. For a kid who had no prior experience with games I got a lot out of that little GameCube disc.
Why spend $45-60 on 1 game, when you can spend that same amount on 3. There are plenty out there especially if the series has been around for a while, or if the gaming company plans on releasing a new addition. ( Like SquareEnix and Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far). So what am I saying? Find game bundles.
3. Don’t be Afraid of Pre-Owned/ Discounted Sections
When you’re starting your gaming collection, a bundle is great start since you’ll probably get 2-3 games from one gaming series. To increase your collection tip #3 is don’t be scared of those pre-owned or discount sections. You know, like that huge bin of $20 games at Wal-Mart or Best Buy. Sure, you’re definitely are going to see some not-so-great games. However, you can find some real gems in those bins and hey if you’re new to this gaming thing anyway might as well try a few interesting games to figure out what you like. And if the game ends up being a dud I’d much rather but out $20 than $60.
